The fix for noisy lifters: How the tap starts.

Inside the adjuster part of the lifter is a piston the size of a pencil-eraser. Your motor's oil pump sends oil under pressure to the lifter, passes a door to get to the adjuster part, and oil pressure forces the adjuster outward so it always stays in contact with the valve it works with. A tiny door - itself a valve, closes to trap and hold oil firm against the adjuster. All is well as long as those parts stay clean.

The lifter tap trouble starts in your engine...  in this way.

From combustion pressures extremely hot combustion gasses escape pass your motor's piston rings and valves as they become residue coated and lazily operate. Those gasses mixes into your motor oil forming sludge. Some sludge is drained out, some travels about - and when sludge holds the adjuster door open - the adjuster collapses -causing the tap this way.

A space develops and the lifter closes that space, a hammer-like smack occurs as it hits the valve on each revolution.
